The egg as a symbol of fertility and prosperity
Giving eggs as gifts on Easter Sunday is a tradition that has been celebrated for many years in different countries around the world. The egg has been a symbol of fertility, hope and rebirth since the beginning of humanity, although the origin of this custom is related to Christianity.
The Christian tradition celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ during the Easter period. It is said that since in the 9th century the Church prohibited the consumption of eggs, dairy products and meat during the period of Lent, it became a custom to give eggs as a celebration of the end of Lent and as a symbol of the return of Jesus Christ to life. According to the Catholic news agency ACI, Pope Paul V in the 17th century blessed the egg in a prayer and thereby ended the prohibition. However, the tradition of consuming and giving eggs as gifts has been maintained to the present day.
Each country has adapted this tradition to its own culture. The first chocolate eggs were made in Germany and France in the 19th century and included a surprise inside. In the United States, it is customary to hide them and have children look for them. In Italy, families take eggs to church on Palm Sunday to be blessed and eaten on Easter Sunday.
We share the value of tradition. The beauty of the customs that are celebrated with food.
