Romania I Râmnicu Sărat

Saul Steinberg

The poet of lines and caricatures

Romanian-American artist and illustrator Saul Steinberg is one of the most influential figures in 20th century graphic art. Born in Râmnicu Sărat, Romania, in 1914, he began his training studying philosophy in Bucharest and architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan. He later emigrated to the United States, where he achieved international fame through his collaborations with The New Yorker, publishing hundreds of illustrations and more than 80 covers.

His work, characterised by its wit and focus on society, is identified by its simple lines with which he creates complex and marvellous human representations. ‘View of the World from 9th Avenue’ is one of his most recognisable and iconic drawings, in which he depicts with great irony the perception of the modern world.

Known as a master of conceptual cartooning, Steinberg expanded the boundaries between art and design. His legacy includes, in addition to his publications, a large number of exhibitions in prestigious museums and exhibition halls. Among them is the recent exhibition at the Fundación Juan March in Madrid, which, from last October until this Sunday, 12 January, has paid tribute to this great artist.

We share a common understanding of art as a form of expression. The effort and satisfaction of turning your passion into your work.
