An artisan of photography
Juan Baraja is one of our favourite photographers. His special sensitivity for shapes, light and details makes his photographs look like real paintings. He is, for us, a real artisan of photography.
We admire the way he appreciates architecture by focusing on every detail and how he treats light. His way of capturing the beauty of the materials and his ability to transmit the energy present in the spaces. The effort of returning to the way of working in the past, using analogue cameras in spite of the difficulty of the process.
Entering his studio in Madrid is a real surprise. The gabled roof, the exposed concrete floor and the original walls create an authentic, spacious and luminous space, perfect for exhibiting his work, which for the last year has been run by the La Cometa gallery.
When you are there, you understand the delicacy and care with which he works. The proportions, the layout, the sizes… everything is designed so that the work is understood and maintains its strength. It was wonderful to see the model he has been working on for his next exhibition at the ICO Museum in Madrid.
We share the striving for excellence and attention to detail. The importance of the treatment of light, the beauty of the places that tell a story. The sobriety, clarity and calm. The way of treating the past as something contemporary.
Un artesano de la fotografía
Juan Baraja es uno de nuestros fotógrafos favoritos. Su especial sensibilidad por las formas, la luz y los detalles hace que, en ocasiones, sus fotografías parezcan verdaderas pinturas. Es, para nosotras, un auténtico artesano de la fotografía.
Admiramos la forma en la que aprecia la arquitectura fijándose en cada detalle y cómo trata la luz. Su manera de capturar la belleza de los materiales y su capacidad de transmitir la energía presente en los espacios. El esfuerzo por volver a cómo se trabajaba en el pasado, utilizando cámaras analógicas a pesar de la dificultad del proceso.
Entrar en su estudio de Madrid es una auténtica sorpresa. El techo a dos aguas, el suelo de hormigón visto, y las paredes originales generan un espacio auténtico, amplio y luminoso perfecto para exponer su obra, que desde hace un año lleva la galería La Cometa.
Cuando estás ahí, entiendes la delicadeza y el cuidado con el que trabaja. Las proporciones, la distribución, los tamaños… todo está pensado para que la obra se comprenda y mantenga su fuerza. Fue increíble ver la maqueta en la que ha estado trabajando para su próxima exposición en el Museo ICO de Madrid.
Compartimos la búsqueda de la excelencia y la atención por el detalle. La importancia que tiene el tratamiento de la luz, la belleza de los lugares que cuentan una historia. La sobriedad, la claridad y la calma. La forma de tratar el pasado como algo contemporáneo.
