Leonardo da Vinci

The Florentine polymath’s unknown passion for cooking and tableware

Painter, anatomist, inventor, architect… da Vinci was a polymath of the Italian Renaissance and is today one of the most exceptional figures in the history of the world. An innovator, visionary and great lover of cooking, Leonardo da Vinci is one of the people we admire, not only for the scale of his work, but also for his concern and commitment to improving people’s lives.

Guided by his passion for cooking, after being apprenticed to a tavern near the Ponte Vecchio, he went on to open his own inn with his friend Sandro Boticelli. He paid as much attention to taste as to the presentation and cleanliness of the place, which, unfortunately, was not understood at the time and led to its closure.

Beyond cuisine, Leonardo da Vinci reflected on the table and its manners, looking for ways to improve the experience of those who sit around it. It is said that he thought about and prepared the recipes that he would include in his great work The Last Supper, before devising the characters. Many of his inventions were related to the art of the table, such as the corkscrew, the three-pronged fork, or even the napkin.

We share the way of pursuing what you believe in. The importance of taking the time to identify needs in order to solve them. The passion for the table, and for cooking.
