Met Gala

From a charity dinner to the big fashion night

The Met Gala is one of the most important events of the year in the fashion world. Each year, the gala kicks off the spring exhibition of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

It dates back to 1948 when Eleanor Lambert, the fashion publicist also known as «the queen of public relations», organised a fundraiser for the Costume Institute. The event, which was advertised as «The Party of the Year» was a success. Later, thanks to Diana Vreeland, who had then been appointed a trustee of the Costume Institute, it gained significant importance due to her many important contacts. In 1972, she decided to move the event to the museum itself. A few years later, it was with the presence of Jackie Kennedy (to whom Diana was style advisor) as co-host of the gala themed «The Glory of Russian Costume» that the event achieved worldwide recognition. Today, since 1995, it is Anna Wintour, co-host of the gala, who heads the organisation.

A different theme each year is defined by the museum itself, first presented to CEO Max Hollein and President Daniel H. Weiss, and then to Anna Wintour who gives final approval. The Costume Institute’s director says with regard to the theme, «It’s important that we stimulate debate and circulate ideas that are difficult to address or considered problematic». The cost to attend started at $50 and is now $50,000, with only 400 places available. The gala begins with a cocktail reception followed by a seated dinner with a carefully selected and exquisite menu.

We share the beauty of traditions and the importance of details. The aim of caring for and enhancing the experience around the table.
