An ancient baronial castle in the Scottish Highlands
In the Highlands of Scotland, surrounded by over 50 acres of woodland, stands Aldourie Castle on the shores of Loch Ness. It was began to be built in 1626 as a family home, now converted into a luxury hotel.
This ancient house, owned by the Macintosh family, began as a two-storey stone building with just one tower. In the mid-19th century the new owner began work to extend the castle, led by Mackenzie & Matthews (a renowned Scottish architect), who maintained the 17th century baronial style and its historic interiors, added several volumes, new towers, large windows and ornaments, and designed the new gardens.
The last renovation was carried out in 2002, preserving the original style. It won the award for best restoration in 2011 from the Historic Houses Association.
The warm and welcoming interiors have been decorated with patterned fabrics, wall coverings, antique paintings and portraits.
The hotel has 9 suites and 6 spacious rooms, each with its own character and decorated in different colours. The bed frames and original velvets have been restored and converted into curtains.
In the restaurant, run by Michelin Star chef Richard Turner, you can enjoy traditional Scottish recipes using local, seasonal ingredients, whilst overlooking the gardens, from where you can stroll to the shores of Loch Ness or take part in a variety of activities such as archery, horse riding and cycling.

Un antiguo castillo baronial en las Highlands escocesas
En las Tierras Altas de Escocia, rodeado de más de 20 hectáreas de bosque aparece el Castillo de Aldourie a orillas del lago Ness. Se comenzó a construir en 1626 como un hogar familiar, reconvertido hoy en día en un hotel de lujo.
Esta antigua casa, propiedad de la familia Macintosh, comenzó siendo un edificio de piedra con dos plantas y tan solo una torre. A mediados del siglo XIX su nuevo propietario comenzó los trabajos de ampliación del castillo, dirigido por Mackenzie & Matthews (reconocido arquitecto escocés), mantuvo el estilo baronial del siglo XVII y sus interiores históricos, añadió varios volúmenes, nuevas torres, grandes ventanales y ornamentos, además, diseñó los nuevos jardines.
La última restauración se llevó a cabo en 2002, conservando su estilo original. Ganó el premio a la mejor restauración en 2011 por parte de la Asociación de Casas Históricas.
Los interiores cálidos y acogedores han sido decorados con telas estampadas, revestimientos en las paredes con pinturas y retratos antiguos.
El hotel cuenta con 9 suites y 6 amplias habitaciones, cada una con su propio carácter y decoradas en diferentes colores. Se han recuperado las estructuras de las camas y los terciopelos originales, reconvertidos en cortinas.
En el restaurante, dirigido por el chef Estrella Michelín Richard Turner, se pueden degustar recetas tradicionales escocesas con ingredientes locales de temporada, mientras se disfruta de las vistas a los jardines, desde los que se puede pasear hasta las orillas del lago Ness o realizar diferentes actividades, como tiro con arco, equitación o ciclismo.
