An art gallery in the middle of the Texas desert
Located in the middle of the Texas desert in the city of Marfa, the Chinati Foundation is one of the most distinguished contemporary art museums in the world. A space founded in 1979 by Donald Judd with a new concept in which art, buildings and nature are connected.
A 300-hectare estate where the former ships of the Fort DA Russell military base (which was active until shortly after the Second World War) and ranches have been rehabilitated and given a new use. A total of 15 different spaces including a library, an architectural studio, an art studio and numerous exhibitions. In the former artillery sheds, natural light enters through the large side windows and is reflected in the aluminium works, creating a unique and special atmosphere. The large concrete sculptures on display outside are integrated into the landscape, completing the collection by connecting indoors and outdoors.
According to founder Judd, the Foundation’s main intention is to focus on «works in which art and the surrounding landscape are inextricably linked». Along with the permanent collection featuring his work, pieces by other artists are on display that keep the museum «alive» and make Chinati a unique destination for art lovers.
We share the enhancement of art and the beauty of unique pieces. The way of keeping the past alive and the connection between inside and outside.
