A space for Galicia’s future, driven by David Chipperfield
Located in the historic centre of Santiago de Compostela, Casa RIA is the headquarters of the RIA Foundation, established by architect David Chipperfield. It is a place dedicated to gathering, conversation and the exchange of ideas around the sustainable development of Galicia.
The building, a former 20th-century sanatorium, has been carefully renovated while respecting its original character and identity. Today, it houses working spaces, the Santiago office of David Chipperfield Architects, spaces for cultural activities, and A Cantina, Casa RIA’s dining room and gastronomic research space. Led by Iago Pazos, its proposal is centred on local, seasonal produce, celebrating Galician gastronomy, proximity, and the relationship between food, territory and sustainability.
All of the spaces are organised around an inner courtyard garden, centred on a majestic magnolia tree and crossed by a circular path made from cockleshells. The garden also includes a small vegetable garden that supplies A Cantina and reinforces the project’s connection to local produce.
We share the beauty of recovering the past and preserving its history. The value of thoughtful design and the importance of protecting and celebrating what is local.
